In order to ensure that the educational system in Nigeria is at per with the present day international standard, the Special Adviser to the Executive Governor of Oyo State on Education, Dr Bisi Akin-Alabi was invited to deliver a paper on School Safety to a crowd of about a thousand teachers at a recently organised conference by the Lagos Anglican Schools Management Board (LASMAB). The conference was held in the premises of CMS Grammar School, Bariga, Lagos on Wednesday, 30th August 2017, with the theme, Equipping Staff for the 21st Century Schools.

Dr Bisi Akin-Alabi spoke about the importance and need for teachers to partake in capacity development workshops on school safety, and also been certified. This, she said will increase the teachers’ awareness of safety issues in the educational sector, which will then transform to curtailing and being able to address challenges when they arise. She also stated that schools are meant to have a Sick Bay, and not a Clinic, as the Sick Bay is only meant to provide First Aid services before the necessary hospital treatments.

Not leaving the playtime which is very important to the pupils out of the discuss, Dr Akin-Alabi urged the members of staff and schools to make sure that the pupils’ playgrounds are safe of hazard-prone objects, and that the flooring should be paddled with rubber or filled with wood chippings to reduce the possibility of the pupils being hurt while playing.

Her presentation welcomed some questions from the audience, which were well answered.
