CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP ON SCHOOL SAFETY FOR AJUMOSE SAFETY AMBASSADORS

Fulfilling its promise to the Ajumose Safety Ambassadors on collaborating with the Ambassadors on school safety, during the launch of the initiative, the Oyo State Model Education System Interventions (OYOMESI) organised a workshop on capacity building for the safety ambassadors on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at the Western Hall of the State’s House of Assembly.

The workshop which was led by the Special Adviser to the Executive Governor on Education, Dr Bisi Akin-Alabi and Negesti (a resource person), had an earlier briefing session on school safety. The ambassadors were then divided into eight groups, with each group consisting of about ten members. In the course of the workshop, the Safety Ambassadors were involved in two exercises aimed at preparing them for the task which lies ahead as ambassadors of safety.

The first exercise required the Safety Ambassadors to give examples of sectors that require implementation of safety measures. In their response, the groups highlighted the following sectors: School/Child, Agriculture, Hospital/Clinics/Health, Transportation, Occupational, Hospitality, Manufacturing/Industrial, Food, Place of Worship, Sports, Water, Banking, Market place and motor parks, Construction, Prisons and Home.

The other exercise carried out during the workshop required the Safety Ambassadors to identify things that constituted hazards in their immediate environment, of which the following were stated; wet tiles, exposed electric junction box, noise pollution, lack of emergency exit, exposed electric wires, abandoned vehicles, slippery toilet floors, overgrown grasses, broken louvres, inadequate organisational planning etc.

The workshop ended with Dr Bisi Akin-Alabi’s address on the need for the Safety Ambassadors to take the initiative serious, hence, making Oyo State and the Nation great.
